Master Council

The American Institute of Kenpo has enlisted a Master Council to give us guidance and to set polity in times of divergence.  Each member of AIK’s Master Council has many years of experience and they bring a wealth of knowledge, insight and real life know-how to assist AIK.

We thank each member for your continued service and the special place you have in The American Institute of Kenpo.

Steve McCoy 6th Degree Black Belt
American Institute of Kenpo Master Council President

01 - Steve McCoy

Mr. Steve McCoy is the President of the American Institute of Kenpo’s Master Council.  His talent as a martial artist has lead him to many tournament grand championships as well as being a sought after seminar instructor.  He has faced many obstacles in his life that would have doomed a lesser man; coming through a brain tumor (and subsequent surgery) with both his insatiable optimism as well as his desire to serve intact.  Mr. McCoy, and his wonderful wife Debbie serve and support the American Institute of Kenpo at every opportunity and AIK is grateful to have them.

Ed Parker Jr.  Ambassador of American Kenpo
American Institute of Kenpo Master Council Member

Ed-Parker-Jr

As a martial artist, Ed Parker Jr. has focused his martial arts training with a foundational and a complex understanding of his father’s art of American Kenpo (outside of the curriculum) training and working under his father.  During the past 25 years Ed has taught, lectured, produced, published, written, illustrated, designed, choreographed and acted in various martial arts-related areas. He has a black belt in American Kenpo Karate. Ed has been awarded everything from a 1st degree black belt up to 10th degree, and has chosen to wear nothing but a plain black belt and claims no rank other than black belt. He prefers to just be a student of the arts in general, exploring and absorbing all that interests him.  The American Institute of Kenpo is thrilled to have Mr. Parker in our school for our yearly camps as well as to have his council in matters concerning the direction of our organization.

Lee A. W. Sprague 6th Degree Black Belt
American Institute of Kenpo Master Council Member

1 Lee Sprague
Mr. Lee Sprague is the consummate warrior; his technical abilities, tactics, and combat mindset are unmatched in his field.  What stands far above however, is Mr. Sprague’s unique ability to draw the very best out of his students.  Mr. Sprague has a way of leaving his presence with you long after the lesson ends.  He becomes the little angel (or devil – depending on circumstance) sitting on your shoulder that gives you unmistakably correct advice, often so difficult to follow.  Mr. Sprague’s teachings have made the difference and saved the lives of his students in moments of crisis (physical and otherwise).  It is, with honor, that the American Institute of Kenpo recognizes Lee Sprague as a member of AIK’s Master Council.

Mike Winkeljohn 6th Degree Black Belt
American Institute of Kenpo Master Council Member

1 - Mike Winkeljohn

Mr. Mike Winkeljohn is a two time World Kickboxing and Muay Thai Champion.  He has a long and decorated fight career and he now trains some of the most well known fighters in the world today.  Mr. Winkeljohn holds a 6th Degree Black Belt in American Kenpo but he is above all, a great teacher and coach.  Mr. Winkeljohn serves the American Institute of Kenpo as a Master Council Member.  He offers his guidance, council and his advanced insights to bridge the gap between Kenpo and full contact fighting.

Rick Fowler 8th Degree Black Belt
American Institute of Kenpo Master Council Member

Mr. Rick Fowler is an Eighth Degree Black Belt who has been teaching and evolving the Kenpo System for over 30 years. He is a second-generation Kenpoist under Mr. Huk Planus. While developing his skills in the Kenpo system he trained with Dan Insanto and Mike Knuaff to hone in on the fluidity of the Filipino martial arts. The consummate student, Mr. Fowler also crosses trains in Russian Systema with Valaimir Vasiliev. Mr. Fowler has dedicated himself to developing a system to fit every individual and is a tremendous seminar instructor. The American Institute of Kenpo is pleased to have his council and friendship.
